‘The miracle happened’, gushes Gus Poyet after Sunderland seal great escape against West Brom

The Uruguayan all but wrote off his side’s survival chances last month, but the Black Cats have secured survival with a staggering run of form . Gus Poyet declared himself a believer in miracles and described Sunderland’s great escape as “one of the best days of my life.”

Fabio Borini completed Sunderland’s survival mission – and all but relegated Norwich. The Italian netted his ninth of the season, to seal victory after Jack Colback’s opener, to put Sunderland safe.

But the Black Cats’ win means Norwich are certain to go down because of the freak swing in goal difference needed to save them, even if they win and fourth bottom West Brom lose on Sunday.

A delighted Poyet said: “I said a few times we needed a miracle and I’m going to start believing in them now. It’s one of the best days of my life.

“It will be remembered forever. Sunderland did it. It is possible. Managers will tell players in the future, even with seven points adrift, you can do it.

“The miracle happened. You need time in any job. We worked and worked. We needed it to click and got it. Same team five times in a row.
“No one could stop me celebrating on the pitch today, not to show off though. “Can we have another season like this? No. I don’t want a heart attack. Or any more grey hair.” Poyet’s side won their fourth consecutive game – a feat no Sunderland side has managed in the Premier League for 14 years. Sunderland’s latest win means they have collected 13 of their 38 points in the last five games in an amazing swing of fortunes.
