Liverpool FC: Mario Balotelli receives roaring praise from Gerrard for Champions League opening performance

Steven Gerrard heaped praise on Mario Balotelli after Liverpool FC secured a dramatic winning return to the Champions League. Gerrard held his nerve to score from the spot in the third minute of injury time and earn the Reds a 2-1 Group B win over Ludogorets.

But the skipper directed the plaudits at Balotelli, who opened the scoring with his first goal for the club following his £16million signing from AC Milan. “You have to give Mario Balotelli credit, he is under the spotlight and everyone is waiting for that first goal,” said Gerrard.

“It didn’t go his way for long periods but the sign of a good goalscorer is to keep going and it only takes once chance and he showed that. “But what is more important than the goal is his work-rate.

“Myself and the rest of the lads were waiting to see what he would give the team, and he ran his socks off. That is the biggest plus for me.” Balotelli’s 82nd-minute opener was equalised by Ludogorets substitute Dani Abalo as the game drifted into injury time.

But Gerrard’s successful spot kick, awarded after Javier Manquillo had been felled by goalkeeper Milan Borjan, means the Reds share top spot with Real Madrid, who thumped Basel 5-1 in last night’s other Group B match.

“It is always nice to win the games especially when you think you’re going to drop two points,” said Gerrard.

“It was nice to get the decision at the end and it was the right decision.”

The Reds head for Basel in their second group game in a fortnight, and Gerrard admits Brendan Rodgers’ side have “a lot to learn” after five
years out of the Champions League.

“Looking at the game as a whole, we did okay,” said the midfielder.

“We didn’t do better than okay.

“(We have got) a lot to learn.

“We go away to Basel now, if we can get another maximum points it puts us in a very good position but the key tonight was always going to be three points before the performance.

“But at Liverpool we always analyse how we’ve done and to judge that performance is, ‘must do better’.”
