PRESS RELEASE… The Law Reform Commission (LRC) has submitted two Opinion Papers following a request made to that effect by the Hon. Attorney General at the beginning of this year
Firstly, the LRC has submitted an Opinion Paper on the harmful practices on social media, and concluded that digital technology has created a “digital safety gap” which is often exploited by criminals in terms of fake profiles, fake news, hate speech and online harassment among others. Inspired by reforms undertaken by various countries like Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Malaysia, the LRC has come up with proposals to strengthen the Mauritian legislation in relation to the said harmful practices on social media. For instance, in cases of identity theft, fake profiles, stalking and grooming, the LRC proposes the introduction of new legislative provisions to combat these new types of offences. Amendments to existing legislations have also been suggested to curb online harassment more effectively.
Secondly, the LRC has submitted an Opinion Paper on the settlement of land disputes. The LRC has reviewed the mechanisms by which land disputes are dealt with under our law, as well as in several other jurisdictions. The LRC has also considered cases of dispossession of land as highlighted in the Report of the Truth and Justice Commission. The LRC is in favour of the establishment of a Land Court in Mauritius.
