PM announces list of essential products under price control

Government, in its commitment to promote the welfare of the population has taken the decision to bring the following essential products under price control: edible oil, pulses, canned tomatoes, canned fish (sardines and pilchards), milk powder, cheese and margarine. Depending on the products and in certain cases, the price may decrease up to Rs 15.

The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this announcement, this evening, during a televised broadcast on the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation.

Prime Minister Jugnauth pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic across the world has impacted on the prices of several basic commodities, resulting on the maritime transportation of these products and leading to an increase in freight and insurance.

He remarked that in Mauritius, an increase in prices of certain products has been noted in the face of the pandemic. As a caring Government, he said, both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Commerce have worked in collaboration to put in place a mechanism for the benefits of consumers. The proposals have been agreed today at the Cabinet Meeting, he said.

Government has earmarked some Rs 500 million for this measure and the new revised prices will be in place for a period of six months, the Prime Minister indicated.

He reaffirmed that Government will remain committed in difficult times to enhancing the quality of life of vulnerable people.

Government will also set up a price observatory for price control so as to protect the purchasing power of consumers which he said will encourage competition on the market and will prevent massive increases in prices.

Prime Minister Jugnauth stated that the State Trading Corporation will examine the possibility to import certain essential products, starting from edible oil so as to stabilise prices and make them more accessible to the population.

He expressed optimism that these measures will bring a relief to the population, especially working class families and vulnerable individuals.
