Government’s priority is the security of the population, states PM
As Government’s priority remains the security of the population, a torrential rain warning from the Mauritius Meteorological Services and a communiqué for closure of schools and tertiary education institutions from the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology have been issued since yesterday. In addition, the National Crisis Committee, through a communiqué this morning, informed the public that no person, except those authorised and engaged in emergency services, should venture outside until further notice.
The Prime Minister (PM), Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement, this afternoon, during a press briefing following a meeting of the National Crisis Committee in Port Louis. The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, as well as other personalities and stakeholders were present on this occasion.
Prime Minister Jugnauth reiterated that these measures have been taken so as to ensure the safety and security of all citizens. He thus urged the population to act responsibly, especially with several regions at risk around the island, and not to venture near rivers or any places where water accumulations can occur.
Moreover, the PM highlighted that all operations around the island are being coordinated by the National Emergency Operations Command and observed that several interventions have and are still being carried out in several priority regions which have been flooded or where the road is impracticable. He nonetheless emphasised that different regions have not been flooded due to new drains built and infrastructural works carried out thereat.
He underlined that, since yesterday, 65 teams, including 21 from the Special Mobile Force, six from the National Coast Guard, ten from the Special Support unit, and 28 from the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service, together with regular police patrols, were deployed in the field and carried out more than 161 interventions. Ten evacuation centres are operational and were hosting 766 people as at 13 30 hrs today, he added.
Furthermore, he underlined that the torrential rain warning is still maintained and that authorities will inform the population accordingly depending of the situation’s evolution. He also appealed to citizens not to call the NEOC for minor incidents so that the authorities can provide assistance to those really affected by the bad weather.
Speaking about rainfall recorded, PM Jugnauth indicated that more than 250mm have been recorded in some regions of the island such as Quatre Bornes and Moka, while Vacoas and Wootun accumulated more than 300mm. He also outlined that the heavy rain has been beneficial for reservoirs but remarked that the situation is still far from normal at this stage.
