Communiqué du CP, Anil Kumar Dip:”The decision of the ODPP therefore creates an ‘evil precedent’ “
Press Release
The mandate of the Mauritius Police Force (MPF) is to protect the population from all forms of crime and drug scourge, said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Anil Kumar Dip, this afternoon at the Police Headquarters.
He reaffirmed the MPF’s main objective to take necessary measures to fight relentlessly against crimes and drug trafficking despite the difficulties and criticisms.
He stated that the MPF has taken cognizance of the ruling of the District Magistrate of the Moka Court and the ensuing communiqué issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). He said that the MPF respects the decision of the Magistrate and the prerogative of the DPP.
The Commissioner of Police further said that both the ruling and the communiqué highlight the risk that Mr Jean Bruneau Laurette leaves the country is ‘highly plausible’ and that the nature of the evidence against Mr Jean Brunette Laurette is strong, sufficient and reliable. Furthermore, he observed that the Police cannot prevent Mr Jean Bruneau Laurette from making international calls and having access to anybody.
He remarked that more than 337 detainees are actually on remand for drug trafficking, and the quantity of drugs as well as the street value is less than the drugs seized from the car of Mr Jean Bruneau Laurette.
The decision of the ODPP therefore creates an ‘evil precedent’ since the lawyers of the 337 drug traffickers may now come forward to apply for bail for their clients, he said. These drug traffickers, if released, can have a negative impact on the population and will jeopardize the security of the youth as well as the work undertaken by the MPF to protect the community at large, he added.
The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed his commitment to work relentlessly to combat the drug scourge. He highlighted that the MPF believes in all institutions and respects the Constitutional rights of Mr Jean Bruneau Laurette.
He stated that the MPF works according to the parameters of the law and appealed for the cooperation of the population. He reassured the population that the MPF is mobilised to fight against the drug scourge. He further expressed his gratitude to all Police Officers for their good work, commitment and even at the peril of their lives.
