A glimpse of some realities of workplaces
So, picture this: you walk into your colleague’s office, and you find his/her desk looked like a paper factory exploded. Notes everywhere, coffee mugs doing double duty as paperweights… “organized chaos” is his/her motto.
You may be more of a “everything in its place” kind of guy, so it was driving your nuts. But watching your colleague navigate that chaos may get you thinking about our workspaces and how they can sometimes feel like they’re working against us.
Turns out, small changes can be game-changers, even if you’re not naturally tidy. They’re so simple, anyone can do them – yes, even my lovably messy wife! Thought I’d share them with you – maybe they’ll help you out too.
I have chosen some novel steps. I find most of them helpful and fruitful. Here are the five super simple tweaks you can try right now to give your productivity a little boost:
- The Quick Desk Clear-Out
Move everything off your desk except what you need right now. Seriously, it’s that simple. Less clutter means fewer distractions, and you might be surprised how much clearer your head feels. It’s vital to cater for your physical space.
The Priority Sticky Note
Grab a sticky note, write down your main task for the day, and stick it where you can’t miss it. This keeps your priority front and centre, making it harder to lose track of what really matters. It’s the simplest tools are the most effective!
- Add a Touch of Nature
Put a small plant or even just a nature photo in your workspace. I like the snake plant ( commonly called in French, ‘la langue de belle-mère’). It might seem silly, but a bit of green can actually help reduce stress and improve focus. No green thumb? No problem. You could try our Mindful Audio nature sounds for a similar effect.
- The Phone Flip
This one’s easy but powerful: turn your phone face-down or put it away during focus time. Out of sight, out of mind – it really does reduce the temptation to check those notifications. If you’re looking for more ways to manage distractions, this practice may help you.
- Make Good Habits Easier
Set things up to make good habits simpler. Want to read more? Leave a book or a magazine on your desk. Planning to go for a run? Set out your shoes the night before. It’s all about removing those small barriers that often stop us from doing what we know is good for us. This may turn out to be a good habit-forming tool.
Why not try one of these tweaks right now? Go ahead. Sometimes these small changes can make a bigger difference than we expect.
I wish that you do enjoy spending your precious time in your workplace. All these simple steps are designed to help you level up your life.
