RACING STEWARDS’ REPORT – SATURDAY 22ND MAY 2021

Track: Soft 2.9  

Rail position: 3m50  

GENERAL (A)  

The protective gear of all jockeys participating in today’s race meeting was inspected by the  Clerk Of The Course. Furthermore, riders were reminded of their obligation to ensure that  they leave enough room for runners whilst riding, and continue to ride in a safe manner.  

GENERAL (B)  

The following trainers and jockeys appeared before the Stewards to confirm their instructions  and discuss their intentions in their respective races: 

Race 1: S.Gujadhur and J.Allyhosain (Red Force One)  

Race 2: S. Narang and D. Bheekary (Heart Of Darkness)  

Race 4: V. Allet and B. Sooful (Promissory)  

GENERAL (C)  

Following the running of the 2nd race, the course condition was upgraded to 2.8 – good.  RACE 1 – THE PORT AU PRINCE CUP – 1400M  

The start was delayed when After The Order was re-saddled behind the starting stalls.  The Right Stuff- Leaving the 1300 metres, was slightly inconvenienced when Artax shifted in.  

Artax- Leaving the 1300 metres, shifted in marginally for a stride, and shifted out shortly  thereafter, slightly inconveniencing The Right Stuff. Jockey Horil was shown the video replays of  the incident, severely reprimanded and advised to leave more room for runners on his inside  when shifting ground in future. Passing the 100 metres, slightly inconvenienced. 

Double Winner- Half-reared on jumping and was slow into stride. 

After The Order- Slightly inconvenienced passing the 1300 metres. Raced wide passing the  1300 metres, and was taken back in, passing the 1100 metres. Carried wide approaching the  600 metres, raced wide from then onwards.  

Amandla- Passing the 1300 metres, shifted in slightly. Jockey T.Juglall was shown the video  replays of the incident, and advised to allow for more room to runners on his inside when shifting  ground in future. Raced wide in the early and middle stages. Made the turn into the home straight  wide.  

Eurotec- Slow into stride. Shifted in over the concluding stages, and slightly inconvenienced Red  Force One. Jockey Orffer was shown the video replays of the home straight, and strongly  advised to straighten his mounts earlier than he did on this occasion.  

Red Force One- Approaching the 1200 metres, commenced to race fiercely and threw its head  up. Jumped the crossing at the 1000 metres. Entering the home straight, was switched to the  inside of Artax to continue going forward. Slightly inconvenienced over the concluding stages.  

Northern Rebel- Slow to begin, and shortly thereafter, shifted out, and was crowded for room.  Approaching the 600 metres, was taken out from behind Red Force One to improve its position,  and carried After The Order wider on the track.  

Result: 1st: Eurotec, 2nd: Red Force One, 3rd: Northern Rebel, 4th: After The Order  

RACE 2 – THE DR. J . EDOUARD BRUNEL CUP – 1500M  

Capkuta- Vet Report: Lame near-fore.  

Dreamforest- Brushed on jumping. Passing the 1300 metres, commenced to race fiercely for  some distance, throwing its head. Approaching the 450-metre crossing, took an awkward stride  and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Siberian Husky.  

Heart Of Darkness- Jumped outwards, brushing the left side of its gate and brushed with  Dreamforest. Shifted out over the concluding stages. Jockey Bheekary was shown the video  replays of the home straight, and strongly advised to straighten his mounts earlier than he did on  this occasion.  

Lead Singer- Brushed with Eagles Vision on jumping. Passing the 1000 metres, was steadied  and taken out to avoid the heels of Mr Green Street. Raced wide entering the back straight.  When questioned, jockey Horil explained that passing the 1000 metres, Siberian Husky, which  was racing on his inside, hung out onto his mount and carried him outwards slightly which  resulted in his mount shifting ground outwards across the heels of Mr Green Street,entering the  back straight wide.  

Mr Green Street- Slow into stride. Raced wide throughout.  

Ruby Spirit- Threw its head on jumping and was slow to begin. Approaching the 150 metres,  was switched to the outside of Dreamforest to continue going forward.  

Flowerscape- Jumped inwards and brushed Ruby Spirit.  

Jet Path- Jumped awkwardly, brushed the right side of its gate, with jockey Sooful becoming  unbalanced for a stride. Raced wide throughout.  

Eagles Vision- Jumped inwards and brushed with Lead Singer. 

Result: 1st: Heart Of Darkness, 2nd: Flowerscape 3rd: Dreamforest, 4th: Ruby Spirit  

RACE 3 – THE RETIRED RACEHORSES COMMITTEE CUP – 1450M  

Whilst being loaded, Bound By Duty broke through its front gate. It was reined in shortly  thereafter, examined by the Official Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to race.  

Apollo Star- Passing the 1000 metres, hung out entering the back straight and shifted outwards  slightly, and thereafter, shifted back in passing the 800 metres, with Bound By Duty, which was  racing fiercely on its inside, having to be restrained for a number of strides. Jockey Joorawon  was shown the video replays of this incident, and advised to exercise more care when shifting  ground in future. 

Bound By Duty- Shifted outwards on jumping. Approaching the 1300 metres, when shifting back  inwards, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Nao Faz Mal, and had to be steadied for a  number of strides. Black Indy, which was following, was switched out to avoid the heels of  Bound By Duty. Passing the 1200 metres, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Apollo  Star. Raced fiercely in the middle stages.  

Itdawnedonme- Raced wide in the early stages.  

Black Indy- Slow to begin. Approaching the 1300 metres, was switched out to avoid the heels of  Bound By Duty. Raced wide in the middle stages. Passing the 150 metres, was switched to the  outside of Lagacio, which was giving ground, to continue going forward. 

Bollinger- Slow to begin. 

Good Buddy- Raced wide in the early and middle stages.  

Affranchi- Stood flat-footed and was slow to begin. Raced wide entering the home straight.  Lagacio- Vet Report: Abnormal respiratory noise.  

Nao Faz Mal- Passing the 300 metres, was taken out to improve its position. Hung in in the  home straight. 

Result: 1st: Paddingtons Luck, 2nd: Itdawnedonme, 3rd: Nao Faz Mal, 4th: Black Indy  

RACE 4 – THE RENE MAINGARD CUP – 1365M  

Following the running of this race, the Stewards held the all clear to review the start of the race. It  was established that after the starting gates opened, the handler assisting Snowy Mountain still  had a hold on its left-side rein, thereby impeding the gelding in its start. After hearing evidence  from the starter, handler and jockey Kalychurun, the Racing Stewards declared Snowy  Mountain a non-starter in terms of Rule 185 (e). All bets on Snowy Mountain were ordered to  be refunded and no cents per rupee were deducted on fixed-odds winning bets; the average  odds of Snowy Mountain being 54-1.  

Lickerio- Raced wide in the early stages.  

Tripod- Jumped awkwardly.  

Roman Dancer- Entering the home-straight was switched to the inside of Lickerio to obtain  clear running, and shortly thereafter, was momentarily steadied off the heels of Tripod. It was  then taken to the outside of Tripod to continue going foward. Vet Report: Bled both nostrils.  Acting on veterinary advice, this gelding has been suspended for 30 days.  

Snowy Mountain- After being loaded, sat back in its gate, and as the start was effected, jumped  slow, losing considerable ground. Trainer Perdrau was informed that this gelding is required to  pass a Barrier Trial in the starting stalls prior to racing again.  

Trip To The Sky- Slow to begin. Raced wide entering the home straight.  

Watch Me Dad- Slow into stride. Raced fiercely passing the 1200 metres.  

Potawatomi- Was hanging out entering the back straight and raced wide for some distance with  Potawatomi giving ground to the field. Passing the 200 metres, was switched to the outside of  Trip To The Sky to continue going forward. Hung in in the home straight. When questioned,  Trainer Narang explained that he had instructed apprentice Roy to drop this gelding at the back  of the field, as it favours a longer distance, and was not expecting it to have pace in the early  stages of the race and make his run passing the 400 to 300 metres. Apprentice Roy confirmed  these instructions, although had understood that he should make his move closer to the 300  metres. Apprentice Roy added that entering the back straight Potawatomi had commenced to  hang out and that he had difficulty assisting his mount to keep in touch with the field. He then  stated that he had urged his mount forward passing the 300 metres and that it had hung in in the  home-straight where it quickened to finish 3rd.  

Result: 1st: Roman Dancer, 2nd: Trip To The Sky, 3rd: Potawatomi, 4th: Watch Me Dad 

RACE 5 – THE CAMILLE L. NAIRAC CUP – 1450M  

The start was delayed when The Byzantine reared over backwards, with jockey T.Juglall’s foot  becoming stuck in the gates. Charleston Hero, which was standing in draw 2, was removed,  examined by the Official Veterinary Surgeon and was found to be injured and acting under  Veterinary advice was withdrawn by the Stewards. Prince Of Persia was removed, examined  by the Official Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to race. All bets on Charleston Hero and The  Byzantine were ordered to be refunded, and 6 cents per rupee was deducted on fixed-odds  winning bets; the average odds of Charleston Hero being 24-1, and the average odds of The  Byzantine being 20-1. Trainer Henry was informed that The Byzantine will be required to pass a  Barrier Trial in the starting stalls prior to racing again.  

Stream Ahead- Jumped inwards, crowding Lemon Drop Shot onto the heels of Prince Of  Persia, with Lemon Drop Shot becoming awkwardly placed between Prince Of Persia and  Stream Ahead, and being crowded for room. Passing the 1300 metres, was tightened for  galloping room between Dynamite Jack and Prince Of Persia. Carried wide passing the 300  metres.  

Prince Of Persia- Passing the 300 metres, was taken out from behind Dynamite Jack to  continue going forward, and in doing so, carried Stream Ahead wider on the track. Passing the  200 metres, shifted in, resulting in Lemon Drop Shot, which was following, having to be  momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of Prince Of Persia, which had shifted in. Jockey  Donohoe was shown the video replays of the incident, and advised to exercise more care when  allowing his mounts to shift ground in future. Hung in in the home straight.  

Arabian Air- Raced wide in the early stages.  

Hubble- Jumped awkwardly, threw its head and was slow into stride. Raced wide in the early  stages.  

Lemon Drop Shot- Slow to begin. Shortly thereafter, was crowded onto the heels of Prince Of  Persia, and had to be eased when awkwardly placed between Stream Ahead and Prince Of  Persia. Passing the 200 metres, was switched to the outside of Prince Of Persia, which was  hanging in, to continue going forward.  

Result: 1st: Dynamite Jack, 2nd: Tsitsikamma Dance, 3rd: Prince Of Persia, 4th: Lemon Drop Shot  

RACE 6 – THE COMMONWEALTH CUP – 990M  

Till Dawn- Jumped inwards and was slow to begin.  

Captain Garett- Passing the 500 metres, was taken in, in an attempt to improve on the inside of  Master Jay, was awkwardly placed, and took an awkward stride off the heels of Master Jay  passing the 450 metres crossing. Thereafter, continued to improve on the inside of Master Jay,  becoming tightened for galloping room and brushed the running rail.  

Trojan Quest- Hung in in the home straight.  

Nikhils Inn- Approaching the 200 metres, was switched to the inside of Captain Garett to  continue going forward. Shortly after the finish, had to be checked off the heels of Captain  Garett, which had shifted in sharply. Desert Illusion, which was following, was checked off the  heels of Nikhils Inn.  

Desert Illusion- Fractious in its barrier prior to the start. Jumped inwards, crowding  Masterofallisurvey. Shortly after the finish, had to be checked off the heels of Nikhils Inn,  which had shifted in sharply when being checked off the heels of Captain GarettMasterofallisurvey- Slow to begin and was crowded for room shortly afterwards.  Le Quartier- Slow to begin. Made the turn into the home straight wide. Hung outwards in the  home straight.  

GENERAL  

On inquiry, jockey Teeha (Captain Garett) pleaded guilty to a charge under MTCSL Rule 208 (e)  in that passing the 450 metres, he rode in a reckless manner by insisting into a dangerous  position on the inside of Master Jay, thereby putting himself and his fellow riders at risk. Jockey  Teeha was suspended from riding in races for two Mauritian race meetings.  

Result: 1st: Captain Garett, 2nd: Master Jay, 3rd: Nikhils Inn, 4th: Desert Illusion 

RACE 7 THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE OF MAURITIUS CUP – 1400M  

Alyaasaat- Crowded onto Vascostreettractor shortly after the start. Thereafter, was eased and  taken across to race behind runners. Passing the 500 metres, was taken out to improve its  position, and raced wide from then onwards. Vet Report: Not striding out after the race, injured  off-fore.  

Horse Guards- On jumping, shifted ground inwards, crowding Alyaasaat onto  Vascostreettractor. Shifted in slightly passing the 1300 metres. Shifted in leaving the 150  metres. Apprentice Sonaram was shown the video replays of the start and advised that he is to  make more effort to straighten his mounts when they shift ground on leaving the starting stalls in  future.  

Table Bay- Knuckled on jumping.  

Opera Royal- Shortly before entering the home straight, was held up for a number of strides  when unable to improve from behind Haylor, which was giving ground, and shifted out, making  the turn into the home straight wide.  

Vascostreettractor- Forced its gate open, was reined in, with the front gate being re-closed.  Raced wide in the early stages. Approaching the 1100 metres, when the pace slackened,  commenced to race fiercely on the outside of Wall Tag and was allowed to stride forward to  secure the lead. Hung in in the home straight.  

Wall Tag- Shifted in passing the 1300 metres.  

Iditarod Trail- Brushed the left side of its gate and was slow to begin. Approaching the 1300  metres, was crowded for room and had to be eased when Wall Tag shifted in, and raced fiercely  thereafter for some distance. Passing the 600 metres, commenced to overrace, was steadied  and switched out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Wall Tag. Passing the 150  metres, had difficulty in securing clear running between Vascostreettractor and Ideal Secret.  

Haylor- Slow into stride. Raced wide in the early stages.  

Ideal Secret- Over-raced in the middle stages. Passing the 1100 metres, was steadied off the  heels of Iditarod Trail for some distance. Passing the 600 metres, was awkwardly placed on the  inside of Iditarod Trail, which had steadied when the pace slackened. When questioned, jockey  Horil explained that he had raced in a comfortable position behind Iditarod Trail passing the 700  metres and when Iditarod Trail shifted out slightly, his mount endeavoured to improve into a gap  on the inside of Iditarod Trail. He then restrained his mount to avoid becoming cramped on the  inside of Iditarod Trail when it shifted back inwards. The stewards advised jockey Horil that he is  to be aware of the dangers of improving into a tight gap on the inside of runners in future.  

GENERAL  

On inquiry, apprentice Roy (Wall Tag) pleaded guilty to a charge under MTCSL Rule 208(f) in  that passing the 1300 metres, he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear,  thereby causing Iditarod Trail which was racing on his inside, to be checked. He was suspended  from riding in races for two Mauritian race meetings. 

Result: 1st: Alyaasaat, 2nd: Wall Tag, 3rd: Ideal Secret, 4th: Horse Guards  

RACE 8 – THE PROFESSOR HASSAN RAFFA CUP – 1365M  

Choir Of Angels- Hung in throughout. Passing the 1000 metres, shifted in slightly, tightening  Culture Trip, which was racing on its inside, for a stride and thereafter shifted back outwards.  Jockey Juglall was shown the video replays of the incident and severely reprimanded and  advised to allow for more room to runners on his inside.  

Hakeem- Raced wide throughout. 

Break The Silence- Shifted in passing the 1200 metres. Passing the 200 metres, shifted out away from the whip. 

Inauguration- Slow to begin.  

Culture Trip- Jumped inwards, brushing the right side of its gate. Approaching the 1200 metres,  was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Break The Silence, throwing its head up. Passing  the 1200 metres, was checked off the heels of Break The Silence, which had shifted in. Passing  the 1000 metres, was tightened on the inside of Choir Of Angels.  

Moschino- Slow to begin. Passing the 300 metres, was taken out to improve its position and  raced wide entering the home straight. Hung in passing the 200 metres.  

GENERAL  

On inquiry, jockey Teeha (Break The Silence) pleaded guilty to a charge under MTCSL Rule  208(f) in that passing the 1200 metres, he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in when  insufficiently clear, thereby causing Culture Trip which was racing on his inside, to be eased. He  was suspended from riding in races for two Mauritian race meetings. 

Result: 1st: Culture Trip, 2nd: Juniper Lane, 3rd: Break The Silence, 4th: Inauguration  

RACE 9 – THE GREAT GUSTO PLATE – 990M  

The correct weight was withheld for the Stewards to consider an objection lodged by jockey  Allyhosain, the rider of Newsman which was declared 2nd, against Go Jewel (B.Sooful),  declared the winner, alleging interference at the 600 metres. Evidence was taken from both  riders, assistant-trainer S.Gujadhur (Newsman) and trainer V.Allet (Go Jewel). It was  established that Go Jewel, which had shifted out off the heels of Chap Trap (A.Roy) passing the  700 metres, shifted back inwards, where Newsman was taken in and insisted on the inside of  Go Jewel and was steadied for a stride. The Stewards, taking into consideration the margin of  0.3 lengths, and that no interference had been suffered by Newsman, overruled the objection  and the correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.  

Time Is Gold- Slow to begin.  

Dunzie- Jumped inwards. Apprentice Sonaram was shown the video replays of the start and  advised that he is to make more effort to straighten his mounts when they shift ground on leaving  the starting stalls in future. Raced wide throughout.  

Minaloushe Venture- Jumped with its head up. Shifted inwards passing the 700 metres.  

Go Jewel- Shortly after the start, had to be eased when crowded for room between Dunzie,  which had jumped inwards, and Real Vision, which had jumped outwards. Passing the 700  metres, was eased and taken out to avoid the heels of Chap Trap. Passing the 450 metres, had  difficulty in negotiating the turn and became awkwardly placed close to the heels of Chap Trap  for a number of strides. Approaching the 300 metres, was taken back in after being carried wide,  and steadied off the heels of Chap Trap, which had shifted in marginally. Newsman, which was  following, was steadied and brushed the running rail. Upon straightening, had to be switched to  the outside of runners to continue going forward. Shifted in over the concluding stages. 

Newsman- Crowded for room shortly after the start. Steadied and brushed the running rail  passing the 300 metres. Passing the 100 metres, was switched to the inside of Real Vision to  obtain clear running.  

Chap Trap- Prior to the start being effected, became fractious and forced its gate open. It was  reined in and its gate re-closed. Passing the 700 metres, was checked off the heels of  Minaloushe Venture, which had shifted inwards when insufficiently clear. Go Jewel, which was  following, was eased and taken out to avoid the heels of Chap Trap.  

Real Vision- Jumped outwards. Jockey Juglall was shown the video replays of the start and  advised that he is to make more effort to straighten his mounts when they shift ground on leaving  the starting stalls in future. Hung in in the home straight.

Result: 1st: Go Jewel, 2nd: Newsman, 3rd: Arctic Flyer, 4th: Time Is Gold  

GENERAL (1) 

a) Pre-race blood specimens were taken from all runners.  

b) Routine post-race urine and blood specimens were taken for analysis from all winners and from  Flowerscape (Race 2), Nao Faz Mal (Race 3) and Iditarod Trail (Race 7)  

c) Urine samples were taken from jockeys R.Joorawon, P.C.Orffer and apprentices N.S.Batchameah  and A.Roy for analysis.
